Abstract

Abraham Kuyper has long been associated with white-racist attitudes, and respecting sub-Saharan Africa that reputation must stand as established. In the long set of essays h e wrote about his 1905-06 trip around the Mediterranean Sea, however, he shows a much more supple and nuanced set of attitudes toward non-European peoples. This lecture will explore and explain how ethnicity, religion, and culture intersected in Kuyper's thinking, noting the substantial research that lay behind his observations and the often surprising conclusions he drew for Christian thinking about the diversity and future of human cultures.
