Description

From civil war in the early parts of the 21st Century to an outbreak of Ebola in 2014, there have been many internally displaced peoples in Liberia. When research efforts done in collaboration with Calvin University Clean Water Institute, the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, Department of Sociology & Social Work, and the Department of Geology, Geography, and Environment at Calvin, the government of Liberia, and Sawyer International occurred from 2017-2021, research found that places had shifted in the country. Liberians had designated new names for new places with the internal displacement. This map reflects a current view of the landscape in two versions, one a Human Landscape Edition and the other emphasizes a Natural Landscape Edition showing the same places. Lead cartographer, Addison Arendt, developed these two editions over two years of work alongside the supervising cartographer, Dr. Jason E. VanHorn. This project includes support to investigate the 300+ maps at the Library of Congress Geography and Maps Division, which provided essential information for the project. This map is the culmination of research efforts done in collaboration with Calvin University Clean Water Institute, the government of Liberia, and Sawyer International. Through various teams of collaborators, Sawyer filtration devices were distributed to households through the country.
