Abstract

This paper addresses the phenomenon of colleges and universities that attempt to repair the reputation of higher education in American society by engaging long disregarded or damned neighbors. This engagement is both long overdue and deeply fraught, especially as predominantly white academic communities interact with Black and Brown organizations and neighborhoods. Drawing on interview data from qualitative interviews among predominantly white institutions and residents of color, this essay argues that one way to decolonize college and community partnerships would entail the practice friendship across institutional and ethnic lines.
