Abstract

Detroit Free Press columnist Stephen Henderson spoke about his investigation of death penalty sentences. The Supreme Court has ruled that under the Sixth Amendment, even convicted murderers have a right to a vigorous defense when a jury is deciding whether or not to execute them. In a four-year investigation, Henderson--former Supreme Court correspondent for McClatchy News Service, now columnist and deputy editorial page editor for the Detroit Free Press--found that in some states defense lawyers regularly fail their clients, leading to unjust death sentences.
