Abstract
Despite growing attention in the media to political, economic, and religious developments in Africa, the intellectual side of African cultures is little known. Lucius Outlaw is a leading scholar of African-American philosophy, and has explored the ways in which African-American ideas and institutions draw on traditions carried across the ocean in the slave trade. He shares his observations on what they contribute to our understanding of philosophy in the West today.
