Abstract

In 1923, a deadly earthquake struck Japan, resulting in widespread destruction and loss of life through out the cities of Tokyo and Yokohama. Dr. Lee will speak to us regarding her research surrounding the riots in the aftermath of the earthquake and the killing of many Koreans in Tokyo. Dr. Lee received her PhD in East Asian Languages and Cultures from the University of Illinois. Her current research examines the competing narratives of collective violence in the early twentieth century Japanese empire.
