Abstract
Since the Pim Fortuyn and Theo van Gogh assassinations, the Dutch political climate has hardened and some critics argue that Dutch tolerance and multiculturalism have failed. A best-selling Dutch historian, Mak is well-known for Hoe God Verdween uit Jorwerd (1996), De Eeuw van Mijn Vader (1999) and In Europa (2004). The lecture was sponsored by, among others, the Netherlands-American Foundation and the Meijer Chair in Dutch Language and Culture at Calvin College.
