Abstract
Professor Robert Swierenga, author of the popular Dutch Chicago, relates the story of some 450 Dutch-owned scavenger and cartage companies that existed between 1890 and 1990 . Swierenga describes their success. They bustled, organized, and innovated while successfully facing up to the powerful Teamsters’ union and the feared Chicago mob.
