Abstract

China's remarkable economic growth has resulted in the nation having the worst environmental problems in the world. The country*s air pollution kills thousands of Chinese residents each year and injures many more. Although the central Chinese government is committed to remedying the problem, the enforcement of anti-pollution laws has been surprisingly ineffective. At the same time, China has become the world*s leading emitter of the greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change., with no regulatory restrictions imposed. Dr. Nagle will address both aspects of China's pollution problems, the efforts of the Chinese government and international organizations to combat those problems, and how the broader idea of pollution may lead to more successful results in the future.
