Ruth Matilda Veldhuis was born on 28 June 1894, in Overisel, Overisel Township, Allegan, Michigan to Mannes and Gerritdiena Immink Veldhuis. She married Folkert de Roos, whom she met at Hope College. Together they had at least one child, Frances Ruth DeRoos. She died on 25 November 1976, in Zeeland, Ottawa, Michigan and was buried in Bon Homme, South Dakota, United States.
Her husband died on August 10, 1921 in South Dakota. Ruth was visiting family in Overisel and was unable to return in time for the funeral.
