From 1981–1985, the journal Historical Geography was published under the name Historical Geography Newsletter. In 1988, it continued as both a scholarly journal and a newsletter for historical geographers, particularly for the Historical Geography Specialty Group of the AAG, established in 1979. In 1990, the newsletter content was transferred into Past Place>, while Historical Geography continued as a North American journal with support from the Historical Geography Specialty Group of AAG and the Historical Geography Study Group of CAG (established in 2006). Over time, it has increasingly aimed toward international audiences and case studies. Today, it is published through the University of Nebraska Press as a free-to-publish open-access journal, with the most recent issue behind a one-year paywall for non-members of the HGSG.
