Abstract
Over the past 16 months, Americans have been inundated with confusing information on the vast Eurasian heartland with which they previously had little or no contact. S. Fred erick Starr, founding chairman of the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute at Johns Hopkins University, will attempt to make sense of the region as a whole. His presentation will bring together the politics, economics, religious life and even the psychology of the 150 million people who occupy this region. He will further identify the major trends of importance to America and the world. Acknowledging the prevailing mood of gloom in the West and in the region itself, he will help listeners address the question, “Are there any grounds for hope in all that is happening there?”
