Before 1969 and the founding of Dialogue, several literary and fine arts review magazines were circulated by a team of editors compiling the creative endeavors of Calvin College students. The first of these reviews, the Calvin Literary Review, was sponsored by William B. Eerdmans, the founder of the WM. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, who offered cash awards to the top three placing pieces to encourage creative writing at Calvin. This developed into a broader Calvin College Fine Arts Review, sometimes referred to as Loci in the 1960's, which started to incorporate music, art, and photography alongside the nonfiction, fiction, and poetry of the previous incarnation. Here it most closely resembles its successor, Dialogue.
