Bertus Frederick “Bert” Polman served as professor of music at Calvin College and as chair of the Music Department. He earned his BA from Dordt College (1968) and his MA and PhD in musicology at the University of Minnesota. He also served as a professor at Redeemer College in Ancaster, Ontario.
Professor Polman taught courses in music theory, music history, music literature, and worship, as well as Canadian Native studies. His research specialty was in Christian hymnody. A talented organist, he played at Bethel Christian Reformed Church and contributed to journals such as The Hymn and Reformed Worship. He co-edited the Psalter Hymnal Handbook and contributed to publications like Songs for Life and Sing! A New Creation.
Professor Polman passed away on July 1, 2013, leaving behind a legacy of scholarship, teaching, and service to the Reformed music community.
