Description
• Proinflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α recruit immune cells to help fight infection and aid in cervical ripening (i.e. dilation).
• Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) such as MMP-9 help with rupture of the gestational membranes (i.e. breaking of the water).
• Prostaglandins, such as PGE2 contribute to myometrial contractions and labor induction.
• Working pregnant women are exposed to both toxicants and pathogens which can contribute to adverse birth outcomes such as preterm birth.
