Abstract

As the holiday season approaches, there’s a temptation (at least in the North American church and context) to fake your emotions and act thankful, even when your life circumstances have you feeling the exact opposite. In 2022, after a long year of financial loss, medical crisis, changes in employment, and loss of essentially our entire support system, I arrived at Thanksgiving feeling almost anything but thankful. However, in that season of feeling less than thankful, God still taught me how to pursue gratitude, even when I didn’t feel thankful. So how do we, as followers of Christ, navigate Thanksgiving when we don’t exactly feel thankful? Rather than prescribing a five-step feel better method that’s not attuned to the reader’s individual circumstances, I want to offer some steps for reflection and practice that can help you navigate Thanksgiving when you don’t feel thankful.
