Description
- Kirtland’s warbler (Steophaga kirtlandii) is an endangered songbird that universally breeds in young jack pine.
- If Kirtland’s warbler is delisted in 2019, protection and funding for management/conservation would decrease.
- Red pine (Pinus resinosa) is a far more valuable timber species than jack pine (Pinus banksiana) and Kirtland’s have been observed nesting in red pine
- We considered whether or not red pine could serve as an alternative breeding habitat to jack pine for Kirtland’s warbler.
